Cuestas are a particular landform that develope when rock units of alternating resistance to weathering are tilted over a regional scale.

In Kansas the formations that underly the Osage Cuestas dip gradually to the west by northwest. There are several hundred feet of Pennsylvanian marine deposits exposed along the gradual slope. The cyclothems of alternating limestones and shales provide an ideal medium for the development of cuesta topography.
