This is an example of one of the ridge forming limestones in contact with an underlying shale in the Osage Cuesta region.

Note how the road cut was constructed. Because of its durability the limestone was cut vertically, and it shows little sign of deterioration. The shale would not support its own weight for long, so it was cut back at a slope. Even with this advantage, considerable weathering is evident on the shale
